“Behold your King!”

John 19:14.

The voice of Pilate was heard across the Governor’s house — “Behold Your King.”

About 1100 years ago the nation of Israel demanded that they be given a king- a king who would judge them (1 Sam 8:6), a king who would go before them in a war against their enemies.

However, Saul, whom they sought, was no good. The same would be said of all the kings that followed, and it was no different for the people.

There were rules of engagement in the Torah for the king and for the people. These expectations were laid out clearly in the Scriptures (Deut 17:14-17; 1Sam 8-12; 1Kgs 2:3-4; Ps 2 calls the Davidic king a “son” of Yhwh).

The people were expected to respect the King (Exod 22:27). The king, on the other hand, was God’s viceroy, and there were rules that limited his power (Deut 17:14-20).

Further, the kings were to judge, representing God, as Yahweh’s agents. They were to observe the covenant and rule the people with justice (mishpat) and righteousness (tsedaqah). They were to be from the people of Israel and chosen by their God. He was not to multiply horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire them; he was not to multiply wives for himself; and he was not to acquire excessive silver and gold for himself. The king was to study the Torah daily under the supervision of the Levitical priests. This was so that he might observe Yhwh’s commandments properly and understand his proper role as king.

For example, King Josiah brought in nationwide religious reforms after listening to commands written in the scrolls (2 Kings 22; 2Kings 23:1-31). Such actions were far and between in the history of the kings of Israel and Judah.

NOW HERE STANDS JESUS

The only one who checks all the requirements of being the true king of Israel. It is as if their desire, their ask, their demands were fulfilled after all these years

YET, THEY RISE TO JUDGE THIS KING

The one true king

They wanted a king…as the other nations have

Here stands a king… who is not of this world

They got a king … Throughout his life, Saul did things to satisfy his own desires and not God’s.

This King will do the will of the Father always

WHAT WILL YOU DO TODAY WITH THIS KING?
