Revelation 7:9. “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,”
What began as babel in Genesis will be redeemed around the throne of God because of the cross of Christ. The confusion of language that scattered mankind will not be a constraint as the redeemed are gathered around the throne.
At a conference, some years ago, the one who led worship had us sing ‘Amazing Grace’ in our own languages. (Isn’t it amazing that this song, ‘Amazing Grace’, has been rewritten into so many languages?) As the thousand or more in the Auditorium that day sang, there weren’t too many dry eyes by the end of it. It felt like heaven. Yet we all knew in our hearts that this experience was but a weak, dim reflection of how glorious it will be around the throne as we sing praises to our God. While there is no clear verse about singing the same song in different languages in heaven, we can surmise that what happened on Pentecost might just be a preview of heaven. The miracle of languages around the throne will be that all of us will understand the 6,014 languages that we know to exist today and sing together in our own languages.
I just can’t wait to see it fully, sing it lustily, enjoy it heartily, while being gathered completely. For this I know with all my heart that our God can and He does redeem. He will undo the curse and turn it into a blessing. #cantwait.
For God redeems chaos to cause celebration; turns cacophony into a chorus; and transforms the confusion of language into a crescendo of praise.
We can’t wait and so we sing today. We have been transformed and so we praise today.
Though we know our best remembrance of Him on earth is nothing compared to what it will be when we are with Him, yet we will, and yes we will, just as He told us to, we will — Remember Me and show forth My death.
Let us turn to the Table.
